Obnoxious Popups

When web surfing, you may find a site with some little green double underlines scattered about on the web page.  If you happen to touch one of those underlines, then a popup ad obscures part of the page.

What the heck is that all about?

The web site owner has decided to try to raise some revenue by adding these infuriating popups to his/her site and is using a service from Vibrantmedia.

I have no objection to someone seeking revenue, but I think a better way is to make the ads more obvious and give me the option to decide if I am interested or not. Being sneaky about it (which this is) does not do it for me.

What that does for me is to decide I won't go back to that site or figure out a way to stop the aggravation.

I don't trust these popups not to install something I don't want.  While they may be perfectly safe, (and probably are ) it seems to me it would be a good way for someone with evil intentions to practice their nefarious ways.

So I have a way to stop those little 'aggravators'.  I use Firefox with AdBlockPlus and put these entries in the filters.:

*.vibrantmedia.com
*.intellitxt.com
*.kontera.com

For good measure, I also added:

*.infolinks.com  (Which is another site adding those popup adds to web pages upon the user's requests.)

If you are using Internet Explorer, put those entries in the Restricted Zone. (Internet Options/Security Tab/Restricted sites)

I haven't found a way for Chrome or Opera users to stop the popups, but when I do I will add the solutions. You can always go to Vibrant's site by clicking on the ? displayed on the popup:

(But I don't trust clicking a link on a popup!)
