Backing Up Your Stuff in Windows 7

Most folks probably know they should make backups. Unfortunately most don't backup what they probably need the most, their email files!

This usually because they have no idea where those email files are stored. No, it isn't in the Documents folder, but in a hidden directory named AppData. To see AppData, first enable viewing hidden files and folders.

Here are locations for some of the most common email programs. (User Name will be your name)

Windows Live Mail files are located in C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

Outlook .pst is located in C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

Thunderbird files are located in C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\0igedyd3.default (Your profile will have different numbers and letters)

The Contacts folder for Microsoft products is located in C:\Users\User Name\Contacts.  Thunderbird stores everything in the profile.

Don't forget to backup your bookmarks/Favorites!

Internet Explorer Favorites are stored in C:\Users\User Name\Favorites. You can also use the File/Export feature to backup your Favorites.  Screenshots

Firefox stores everything in the profile located in C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. If all you need are your Bookmarks, then use the option to back up the Bookmarks in Organize Bookmarks.  Screenshots

Opera stores everything in C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera. To save just the bookmarks sue the function for saving bookmarks in Opera. Screenshots

Chrome's file location is C:\Users\Martha\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default  To save just the bookmarks in Chrome use the export feature in the Bookmarks Manager. Screenshots
